5 Surprising Facts About Corrugated Packaging

From hidden air pockets and impressive strength to sustainability and smart engineering, corrugated board is packed with surprising facts. Here are a few that might just change the way you look at the humble box.

Fact 1: It’s Mostly Trapped Air
Visually, a corrugated sheet looks solid, but by volume, a significant portion of a standard box is actually trapped air. The geometric gaps created by the fluting lock in pockets of air that help absorb physical impacts. For specific board and paper types, this dead air space can also provide a mild natural thermal barrier, aiding in temperature regulation during transit.

Fact 2: It’s older than you think
Corrugated material was patented in 1856 in England - not for boxes, but as a lining for tall hats to make them more comfortable!

Fact 3: Highly Recyclable & Earth-Friendly
Corrugated cardboard is one of the most recycled materials in the world, with fibers often being reused up to seven times before being retired. Because it is made from natural wood fibers, unlined and uncoated corrugated board is also completely biodegradable and compostable. In a standard backyard compost pile, it typically breaks down fully within 2 to 3 months, making it as kind to the earth as it is tough on the road.

Fact 4: "Cardboard" and "Corrugated" Are Not the Same
While often used interchangeably, they are completely different materials:
Cardboard (Chipboard/Paperboard): A single thick layer of paper pulp, like what you see in cereal boxes or shoe boxes, designed for lightweight retail packaging.
Corrugated: A high-tech sandwich of three or more layers (two flat liners and a fluted inner medium) specifically engineered for heavy-duty shipping and stackability.

Fact 5: It Can Be Moisture-Resistant
While standard paper absorbs water, the use of correct virgin paper grade as well the fact that corrugated board can be treated with specialized coatings or water-based barriers to make it moisture-resistant. This engineered protection prevents the board from softening or losing its strength in humid environments, making it ideal for the demanding conditions of cold storage and chilled supply chains.
